The snow child is one of the most magical novels i have read during my long life ivey's characterization, story telling and scenic prowess are all delivered in words that sometimes whisper, often sing, occasionally growl and frequently entrance.
As much as i loved falling under the spell of “the snow child,” in colder moments i became aware that it’s too long the plot isn’t really complex enough and ivey’s style isn’t rich enough to support 400 pages. The snow child is the most shocking of the tales in the collection by colatitudes the snow child is the shortest story in the book however it can be easily argued that it is the most shocking this is because on the two pages on which it lays, the is shocking to the reader as we don’t expect the count to be a necrophilia.
Based on a russian fairy tale, the snow child is a tale of the shoring up of defences, psychological and literal, against the cold and dark set in the 1920s, the novel follows the move of middle.
Mabel used to read this story as a child, and she wanted to believe that faina was her very own snow child similarly, i liked how she also juxtaposed faina's story with the snow child story from mabel's childhood. One evening, though, their mood lifts, and the couple play in the newly fallen snow they build a little snowman, complete with scarf and mittens jack takes out his pocketknife and sculpts its tiny, perfect face – a child's face, a girl's. The snow child is not weak because she is a woman she is weak because she fits the un-maintainable masculine idea of female perfection, good, loyal, and submissive just as in the erl-king and the bloody chamber, in the snow child, becoming a reflection of male idealization is a death sentence for the heroine.
